Went on holiday to Majorca - a village in the Northern mountains. Was my first time in the Med. and was just blown away by the whole thing.

Thinking back, Spain must've been dirt poor in those days -hardly a car on the road and women doing their laundry in a watercourse running through the village. That was all to change very quickly in the 1980s - now the area is on a par with Switzerland.

Not self-catering, neither.

Or is communal dining in a big canteen more chavvy than self-catering? Can't work it out.

I remember loud cheers from diners when the sound of broken plates emanated from the kitchen. My dad ruined it by pointing out they did it on purpose and the plates were probably already cracked.

Re: 1978
Holiday in Butlins, Clacton, for something like the fourth year running. I always wanted to go to the Minehead one - it looked so much more exciting in the brochure - but my dad was a terrible driver and couldn't hack that distance.

Actually he had never taken driving lessons or a test, so never actually had a licence to drive. He once bribed a neighbour not to call the police when he drove through her privet hedge while driving drunk. He used to drive when paralytic quite regularly.

Anyway, to think we used to get paper holiday brochures from a travel agent and fill in little forms at the back of them to book a holiday.

We also went to LEYSDOWN, of course, for a couple of long weekends.

Butlins in Clacton and LEYSDOWN. Splendour.

I was 10.

Can remember Archie Gemmell's goal at the World Cup in the days the commentators sounded like they were in space. Mum took my sister and I to see Grease at the Norwich Odeon if memory serves me correctly (I was 10 !!!) and probably watched all the American stuff on TV at the time like Starsky and Hutch, Charlie's Angels and The Incredible Hulk!!

18 yrs old. Started in Lloyds bank on £1998 per year.

Went to first away game at Palace. Drew 1-1. Alan Taylor scored.

Had my first McDonald's in Southgate.

Drank far too much. Light and bitter. and smoked even more Chesterfield or winston cigarettes.

Donkey jackets.

Great days.

Had my heart broken by Anne.

Re: 1978
In 1978 my Dad tended to believe a fair bit of whatever was appearing in the papers. Consequently I used to have to hide my Punk singles, due to their general debauchery, and his belief that they were out to bring down the Royal Family.

Was 1978 the year of the dinner ladies strike?....if so, that'd also be the year that I first got drunk. Half a dozen of us aged 11, decided to forgo with packed lunches etc, and instead replace peanut butter sandwiches, with someone's parents bottle of vodka and a fair bit of an elder brothers home made beer.

Back at school in the afternoon, first up was P.E. and the game of 'pirates', which proved to be a bit of a non-starter for those who'd opted for the liquid lunch.
